The impact team at LSE comprises only Middlemass and Booluck. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s just the two of us in the team<\/span>\u00a0and we do similar work<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>clarifies Middlemass.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Both of us<\/span>\u00a0talk to\u00a0<\/span>academics\u00a0<\/span>about their impact<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>help\u00a0<\/span>them write\u00a0<\/span>that up in\u00a0<\/span>case studies.\u00a0<\/span>Apart from working with<\/span>\u00a0individual academics, we typically work\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>the research impact coordinators within departments and centers.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e also\u00a0<\/span>report to the S<\/span>chool<\/span>\u2019s REF Strategy Group<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and coordinate their<\/span>\u00a0input\u00a0<\/span>to developing case studies for the REF<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Push<\/span><\/b>ing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for more information\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When asked what kind of qualifications or personality\u00a0<\/span>make\u00a0<\/span>one a good fit for the impact manager role,\u00a0<\/span>they\u00a0<\/span>clarify that you don\u2019t need a research background.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>You\u2019ll be a good fit a<\/span>s long as you have a broad understanding<\/span>\u00a0of a<\/span>nd interest in research<\/span>, and your mind is open to\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>many different ways that research can have a demonstrable effect on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the economy or society<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Booluck says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Middlemass adds, \u201c<\/span>Y<\/span>ou\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>need to have some people skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You spend a lot of time asking people endless\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>so\u00a0<\/span>what<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>question<\/span>s<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You have to\u00a0<\/span>constantly push for more information<\/span>\u00a0without alienating<\/span>\u00a0or annoying<\/span>\u00a0your academic colleagues. It definitely helps to be genuinely interested in their work.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Picking stories that deserve attention<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

LSE\u00a0<\/span>allocates<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>fairly significant amount<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>funding\u202f<\/span>to support<\/span>\u202fimpact<\/span>–<\/span>related projects<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0contributing to decisions about the allocation of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>these funds is<\/span>\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0part of Middlema<\/span>ss<\/span>\u00a0and Booluck\u2019s job<\/span>. The knowledge exchange projects that\u00a0<\/span>LSE<\/span>\u00a0supports can be great sources\u00a0<\/span>for future REF case studies<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but<\/span>\u00a0there\u2019s no set way of\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>unearthing<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0impact<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>\u00a0lot\u00a0<\/span>of their understanding of the impact of LSE research comes\u00a0<\/span>through conversations<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>We rely heavily on<\/span>\u00a0conversations with researchers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>There\u2019s no automatic notification of impact having happened, so we rely<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on having sources of intelligence within department<\/span>s<\/span>,\u201d Booluck says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Middlemass adds\u00a0<\/span>that they also\u00a0<\/span>scan the new<\/span>s for mention of<\/span>\u00a0research conducted at LSE<\/span>\u00a0to give<\/span>\u00a0them a sense of whose work is being discussed<\/span>, and they try to remain aware of major impact plans in current and recent<\/span>\u00a0grant applications<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I<\/span>f somebody thinks\u00a0<\/span>they<\/span>\u00a0might have\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0case study<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we go and sit down with them for an hour and\u00a0<\/span>talk to\u00a0<\/span>them about what they’re doing<\/span>. We\u2019ll discuss<\/span>\u00a0their research,\u202fwho they’re currently talking to, maybe help them think about other people that they could be talking to,\u202fif that’s the right\u202fsort of\u202fstage of development<\/span>. Then we\u2019ll<\/span>\u00a0write\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>that up for them and send it back to them<\/span>, and that\u2019s the start of what can be quite a long, iterative process of developing a really good impact story<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says Middlemass.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Middlemass and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Booluck have the not-<\/span>s<\/span>o-easy task of\u00a0<\/span>facilitat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0culture\u00a0<\/span>change<\/span>\u2014essentially changing th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0way<\/span>\u00a0people think of research impact. \u201c<\/span>Part of o<\/span>ur<\/span>\u00a0job is to\u00a0<\/span>help\u00a0<\/span>make people care about impact where they didn’t before<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says Middlemass.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Impact case studies submitted to<\/span>\u00a0REF2014<\/span>\u00a0demonstrated that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>impressive\u00a0<\/span>impact wasn’t\u00a0<\/span>confined<\/span>\u00a0to research<\/span>-intensive\u00a0<\/span>institutes. \u201c<\/span>Excellent i<\/span>mpact\u00a0<\/span>is being delivered by universities of all types<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and some of the less research-intensive places have really great traditions of partnership with non-academic groups and organi<\/span>z<\/span>ations<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says Booluck.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rachel\u202f<\/span><\/b>Middlemass<\/span><\/b>, Research Impact Manager, London School of Economics\u00a0<\/span>and Political Science<\/span>\u00a0(LSE)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rachel Middlemass<\/span>\u00a0joined LSE as\u00a0<\/span>Research Impact Manager in 2014. Her<\/span>\u00a0role\u00a0<\/span>involves providing<\/span>\u00a0support for the delivery, documentation<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and evidencing of research impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Middlemass\u2019s stint with<\/span>\u00a0research impact\u00a0<\/span>began\u00a0<\/span>in 2011 at University of East London where she was the Research Impact Coordinator.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She\u00a0<\/span>was simultaneously working on her PhD degree\u00a0<\/span>from the University of Nottingham.\u00a0<\/span>In 2012, she\u00a0<\/span>joined University College London<\/span>\u00a0(UCL)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as Senior Editorial Consultant<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>where\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span>\u00a0managed\u00a0<\/span>the Research Impact Curation\u00a0<\/span>team\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>help<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>departments<\/span>\u00a0across<\/span>\u00a0UCL<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>develop case studies of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>research impact<\/span>\u00a0for REF2014<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>She\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>helped\u00a0<\/span>develop new tools and processes to store and search for examples of research impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

Kieran Booluck<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Impact Support Manager, London School of Economics\u00a0<\/span>and Political Science (LSE)\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before taking on the role of\u00a0<\/span>Impact Support Manager at LSE in\u00a0<\/span>November 2018, Booluck was editor\u00a0<\/span>of the\u00a0<\/span>LSE Impact Blog<\/span><\/a>, which publishes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0topics related to academic research, scholarly communications, and research policy and evaluation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Booluck comes with\u00a0<\/span>an<\/span>\u00a0academic publishing<\/span>\u00a0background<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Before joining LSE,\u00a0<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at Emerald Group Publishing,\u00a0<\/span>where he\u00a0<\/span>was responsible for the editorial development and profitability of academic journals<\/span>. He previously\u00a0<\/span>played a key role in the launch of\u00a0<\/span>Emerald\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>new journals, from market research to training of editorial teams to creating proposal collaterals<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
